Deaf Wireless Consultative Committee Continues to Fight for Fair Data Pricing

Deaf Wireless Canada Consultative Committee faces constant struggle in obtaining fair data pricing for deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing individuals throughout Canada and this past week, Navdeep Bains rejected a mandated MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) system once again and people are outraged!

Josh Tabish called Navdeep out on Twitter:

The Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains and he signalled the government’s hope that the competitiveness problems in the Canadian wireless sector – consumers still pay some of the highest rates in the world – could be addressed through mandating access for new competitors on a wholesale basis.

Deaf Wireless Canada Consultative Committee (DWCC) will continue to fight for data fair data pricing! Individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing most likely don’t need voice services bundled into their plan. Instead they need access to larger LTE data buckets for services such as video calling.

The DWCC will be responding to the proposed wireless packaging by the big 3 telecoms (Rogers, Telus and Bell) which have until April 23rd to submit proposed low-cost packages to the national telecommunications tribunal, the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). They will submit their views and concerns regarding accessibility packages by May 23rd.

They currently have 26 ASL & LSQ members of our Committee from 7 provinces. Committee was originally established in July 2015 to address the concern of data plans going over due to video communications and wanting fair data pricing.

The Committee consists of the following people:

Lisa Anderson-Kellett, Chairperson (British Columbia)

Elliott Richman, Vice Chairperson (Nova Scotia)

Michael J. Stewart, Secretary (New Brunswick)

Darryl Hackett, Treasurer (Ottawa, Ontario)

Jeffrey Beatty, Technical Assistant/Assistant Treasurer (Ottawa, Ontario/Colorado)
